Jordan Wine Estate named Top South African Wine Estate at the 2011 SA Terroir Wine Awards

Jordan Wine Estate has received the Top Wine Estate Trophy for the highest achieving estate at the 2011 Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards. Four Jordan wines were selected for the final judging, the Jordan Chardonnay 2009, Jordan Chenin Blanc 2009, Jordan Riesling 2009 and the Jordan Nine Yards Chardonnay 2009, with the last three wines awarded Stellenbosch Regional Winners. The Jordan Riesling and the Jordan Nine Yards Chardonnay also received National Trophy awards; both rated the highest scoring wines of the competition.
The SA Terroir Wine Awards Competition is only open to wines that are certified as estate, single vineyard or ward-specific wines. “We control every aspect of our winemaking from the soil to the bottle, ensuring that our wines have a definite sense of place, unlike many of the mass-produced wines available in the international wine market today” explained former geologist now cellarmaster and owner, Gary Jordan. “We strive to make terroir-driven wines that are immediately recognisable as being from Jordan Estate. Provenance is as important to us for our wines as it is to Chef George Jardine of the Jordan Restaurant and Chef Justin Saunders of High Timber, our London restaurant.” “Following our recent success at the 2011 Decanter Wine Awards, (including a Gold Medal for the Nine Yards Chardonnay), as well as receiving the Riesling Trophy at the 2011 SA Trophy Wine Show, being awarded the Top SA Wine Estate Trophy is a great accolade,” commented Kathy Jordan. “With the 2009 Jordan Sauvignon Blanc receiving the Stellenbosch Regional Winner award at last year’s SA Terroir Wine Awards, our customers have come to recognise the consistent quality throughout all our wines produced on our unique Estate.”
About Jordan Nine Yards Chardonnay:
This 20 year old, site-specific, SE-facing vineyard is situated on a geological fault with white quartz pebbles over deep clay loam soils, high above the Stellenbosch Valley floor. Innovative canopy management and low crop levels ensure that the vineyard produces smaller berries with concentrated citrus flavours. Butterscotch, spicy cloves, lemon/lime and orange peel with complex mineral citrus flavours abound. A rich mouthfeel and subtly balanced toasty French oak integrates with the long, tropical peach and melon finish enhanced by the wild yeast fermentation. The wine was matured “sur lie” for 12 months, with regular barrel-rolling to accentuate the rich, leesy character.
About Jordan Riesling:
The Riesling was harvested from a single 23 year old dryland-farmed S-facing vineyard, situated on 600 million year old decomposed granite, one of the highest and coolest sites on the Estate. Once the perfect balance between fruit and acidity was reached, the fermentation was stopped to retain a hint of natural residual sugar. The wine has intense lemon-lime flavours with a crisp fruitiness, making it a superb partner with food and hints of spiciness adding to its intrigue.
