The Outlier Press Release
Jordan Wine Estate has released a new white wine named ‘The Outlier’. A single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc situated between 310 and 400m above sea level on the highest and coolest site on the estate provides the grapes for this intense wine.
An ‘Outlier,’ in scientific terms, describes phenomena that lie outside the normal experience. “The name ‘The Outlier’ suits this wine well,” explains Kathy Jordan, “as the earlier vintages of this wine style under the name of our Jordan Blanc Fumé often received the highest accolades, with the 2008 vintage being awarded a Gold medal and Best in Class at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.”
Geologically, an outlier is an outcrop of rocks that is entirely surrounded by older rocks. “The quartzite formation underlying the Sauvignon Blanc vineyard used for this wine is surrounded by older (600 million years old) mineral-rich granites,” explains geologist now winemaker and owner of Jordan Wine Estate, Gary Jordan.
A unique site, from the vineyard one has a spectacular, panoramic view over the Cape Peninsula and 5 different wine regions. The grapes ripen within sight of Cape Point, Robben Island and False Bay, up to three weeks later than the other Sauvignon Blanc vineyards at Jordan.
Aromas of zingy citrus, lemongrass and gooseberry abound, with a richly textured, creamy mouthfeel and a sherbet mineral layer spicing up the finish. Barrel fermentation raises this single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc into a different class, a true outlier.
